Matsu

Understanding the pace and process followed by nature, knowing how to wait for it to evolve without excessive intervention and settling for simplicity is something that the winegrowers in the D. O. Toro have been doing for years to create their wines.
From this philosophy emerged the Matsu collection, a word that in Japanese means "wait" and perfectly summarises what these wines are. Vintae has committed itself to D. O. Toro and to create this collection of wines, which have the personality and authenticity that this area is noted for.
Vintae provides these wines with the touch of smoothness freshness and fruitiness that wine enthusiasts look for today. By means of this collection, at the same time it pays homage to three generations of winegrowers that have devoted their life to the field.

Philosophy

The wine trilogy ‘El Pícaro’, ‘El Recio’ and ‘El Viejo’ represents three generations of wine growers, each with a relationship with the land typical of his age and his vital stage.
The personality of each person embodies the characteristics of the wine which gives name. Thus, ‘El Pícaro’ is strong and brave, cheeky and uncontrollable.
‘El Recio’ brings together the power of youth and the experience of maturity, to express serenity, perseverance and strength.
‘El Viejo’ is the fullness and wisdom, knowledge of the land that has worked.

These three wines and their three protagonists epitomize the essence of Matsu, the tribute to generations of wine growers.
Matsu contributes 0.7% of its benefits to environmental projects.

Biography

Under the management of its founder, Ricardo Arambarri, Vintae has a group of more than seventy professionals sharing their passion for the world of wine and a creative and dynamic spirit that they apply in each of their areas. In the technical team noteworthy are the seven winemakers on the staff. Raul Acha manages the team and controls all processes. In addition, an oenologist is present in each of the wineries owned by the company. The entire technical team has a common passion, essential to create and dream up Vintae wines: clearly vineyard oriented. Raul Acha was brought up among vineyards in his hometown, Cárdenas (Rioja Alta), coming from a family who has been dedicated to viticulture for generations. He defends that a good wine is made in the vineyard, and therefore the main motto of both the field team and the winery team is respect for the raw material with which their wines are made.

Toro has two ingredients that have always attracted the attention of
our technical team. On the one hand, it is an area that traditionally has not interfered with the vineyard too much. Thanks to the climate conditions, with low humidity, and sandy soils there is no need to apply any chemical treatments to avoid diseases as other places do.
This may have contributed to the tradition of respecting the pace and allowing nature to play its role. The tradition is such that there is a firm commitment to organic wines and biodynamic agriculture.
On the other hand, there are old vineyards of extraordinary quality in the D. O. Toro. Some of these vineyards are Pre-phylioxera. The phylioxera disease entered Spain at the end of the 19th century; however, Toro was not affected so drastically, as their sandy soils in many cases avoided the disease from destroying the vines.
Toro's wines have always been noted for the enormous strength and personality of the Tinta de Toro, a variety from which Raúl Acha also had the intention of extracting an elegance and smoothness that would open these wines to a wider audience. The challenge was to make Toro wines that combine the area's traditional strength and a smoothness and elegance adapted to the tastes of the current consumer.
