Since 1989, winemaker Rick Moshin has been producing natural, terroir-driven wines in the Russian River Valley. He sustainably farms his own Pinot Noir vineyards and using the natural yeasts of his grapes and, with the help of a dedicated winemaking team, gently makes small-lot, premium wines in their gravity-flow winery in Sonoma.
The Moshin Estate is comprised of four vineyards, all planted along the famed Westside Road at the southwestern border of the Middle Reach neighborhood of the Russian River Valley AVA. This classic neighborhood, the includes Gary Farrell, Porter Creek, Rochioli, and Williams Selyem, is known for producing textured wines with ripe flavors and gentle aromatics of florals, earth, and baking spices — elements you'll find in the various styles of Moshin Vineyards Pinot Noir.
The Moshin Estate, Calliope, Rosalina, and River Myst Haven vineyards are either near or adjacent to the Russian River and its maritime influence. All four vineyards benefit from the Russian River Valley's ideal growing conditions for premium Pinot Noir: ample morning fog, daily temperature swings of 35 degrees and in some cases, the golden-hued mix of sandy loam and clay known as Goldridge soil.
Celebrating their 30th anniversary in 2019, they're still family-owned and -operated, and their focus remains on hand-crafting some of the highest-quality wines in the Russian River Valley AVA. In addition to several styles of Pinot Noir, they make Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, Merlot, dessert wines, traditional-method sparkling wine, and a crowd-pleasing, award-winning Rosé of Pinot Noir.

Philosophy

Craft winemaking begins with sourcing excellent quality grapes. Moshin estate vineyards are managed by the winemaker and are farmed sustainably. Next is guiding the fruit through the fermentation process with as little intervention as possible. The goal of creating an authentic and expressive wine is accomplished with hand sorting, native yeast fermentation, gentle punch-downs, using gravity to move delicate wines and utilizing quality barrels for aging.
In order to pamper our estate specialty, Pinot Noir, owner/winemaker Rick Moshin designed and built one of California’s first gravity-flow wine cellars. Delicate, thin-skinned Pinot Noir grapes are sensitive to being overworked, so Moshin Vineyards’ four-level cellar uses the momentum of gravity—rather than the more aggressive power of pumps and conveyors—to gently move them between each stage of wine production. Gravity-flow cellar production allows us to naturally capture the fragrant aromatics and delicious flavors of our estate Pinot Noir.
The attention to detail in winery design, vineyard management and thoughtful cellar practices is evident when a glass of Moshin wine is shared and brings about a smile and an “ahhh.”

Biography

The story of Moshin Vineyards is that of a true labor of love, beginning with the first day of harvest in 1989. This was one of the most challenging of growing years in the Russian River Valley - culminating in unrelenting rain while grapes were being picked by the Moshin family at their little 10-acre vineyard on Westside Road. Subsequent harvests arrived, some with amazingly ideal growing conditions and some with various farming challenges. Rick Moshin taught himself to farm the grapes and as each vintage came and went, production increased in small amounts, as did his wine growing knowledge. His sister, Janet Moshin, helped with harvests and sales while Jean (Mama) Moshin assisted with bookkeeping and sales up until 2006. Rick Moshin’s desire to build a state-of-the-art winery for his Estate-grown grapes increased, and with perseverance, and a bit of luck, this hardworking family realized their dream and Moshin Vineyards Winery and Tasting Room opened in the fall of 2005. In 2007, Rick Moshin married and his wife, Amber Moshin, joined the team with a focus on marketing the fledgling wine brand. The winery’s progression is an authentic story of a family’s desire to create a special bottle of wine that originates from the heart and speaks to yours with every sip.

“It all starts in the vineyard.” This has been a prevailing philosophy at Moshin Vineyards with vineyard practices continuing to be sustainable - focusing on the winegrower’s connection to the earth as a whole. The goal of vineyard health is to create a fertile growing environment - an atmosphere for “happy” grapes to thrive, thereby producing ideal fruit that can be made into exceptional wine. The winemaking process has remained minimally invasive - paying homage to old world techniques such as native yeast fermentation, little to no additives, and the use of gravity to move wine –practices that have served mankind in producing beautiful wines for centuries.

One of the most unique attributes of the winery is the “gravity-flow” design for the production of Pinot Noir. Grapes are crushed at the top level of the winery and from there they make their way from fermentation, to settling, to barreling, to bottling - moving down four tiers allowing the gentle force of gravity to move the wine at any given stage of production. This method allows for the beautiful and subtle flavors of Pinot Noir to be preserved until they can unfold and reveal themselves gracefully in your glass. Moshin’s finely crafted boutique bottlings total only 7000 cases per year, yet this state-of-the-art winery is capable of producing 30,000 cases of wine per year. Rick Moshin’s thoughtful winery design for small-lot production has resulted in an impressive roster of custom crush winemaking clients that have utilized the extra production space to make their award-winning wines at Moshin Vineyards Winery

Since the tasting room opened it’s doors in 2005, there has been a continued flow of visitors - many referred from our neighboring wineries, inns and restaurants. The overall response to Moshin wine is one of the most rewarding experiences that our family and extended family of team members is blessed to experience. Our team of uniquely talented staff exudes a strong sense of camaraderie and dedication to making and selling wines of excellent quality. The results of this wonderful work dynamic can be found in reviews, repeat customers, referrals and the loyalty of our Wine Club Members.
