Welcome, Hendry!

Now Available in Texas

George Hendry (pictured, right) and his family have grown grapes on the same family farm in Napa Valley since 1939. Through more than eighty years of harvests, their connection to the land has deepened, and their knowledge has grown. Jeff Miller manages the winery and coordinates the operations that get the wine from tank to bottle. Cellar Master Rafael Melgoza, along with his son Luis, who is pursuing his studies in viticulture and enology, are responsible for carrying out all of the daily cellar operations. Together with Jeff, they assist George in overseeing fermentation and development of the wines. Photo courtesy of Hendry

Hendry has a strong sense of environmental responsibility, farming their land ethically and sustainably since 1939. Hendry does not apply any herbicides or pesticides in the vineyard. They also maintain a complex, naturally diverse cover crop to foster healthy, aerated soil and minimize the need for added nitrogen. Serendipity currently carries Hendry’s Albarino, Barrel Fermented Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Unoaked Chardonnay, and Zinfandel.

One of Napa’s Best-Kept Secrets

Hendry Ranch is composed of 203 acres situated in the low, rolling hills just northwest of Napa, at the foot of Mt. Veeder, and includes 114 acres under vine. The parcel is uniquely situated for growing a surprising number of varietals. A mix of rocky, alluvial soils with areas of decomposed shale is not too rich and drains well. The cooling influence of the nearby San Pablo Bay moderates the temperature, making it suitable for both early and late varietals. The vineyard is divided into 50 distinct “blocks” based on variety and clone, as well as differences in soil, moisture, climate, i.e., terroir.

For over thirty years, the Hendry Ranch sold grapes to a number of prestigious wineries. George’s Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel caught the attention of Robert Mondavi’s Reserve program, including their groundbreaking Opus One project. Eventually, George was encouraged by fellow growers and winemakers to try making wines under his own label. In 1992, with the help of business partner and neighbor Susan Ridley, he began making his own wines from select vineyard lots. The first year, 500 cases of Zinfandel and Cabernet were made from Blocks 7 and 8.

This location in the valley experiences substantial marine influence, allowing them to grow more than a dozen different types of wine grapes. All Hendry wines are made only from estate grapes, crafted to highlight their unique terroir.

Serendipity is excited to bring these historic Napa Valley wines to Texas at an attractive price point. Want to try them yourself? Check out the full lineup, then fill out the contact form below!
