Winemaking Robertson, located 100 miles east of Cape Town in the Breede River Valley, is known for producing world class fruit-forward and mineral driven Chardonnays. With soils rich in limestone and broken mountain rocks, these vineyards are 7-22 years old and set at 160 meters elevation. Robertson's dry, warm climate, with 400mm annual rainfall and cooling ocean breezes, supports premium grape production. Daytime temperatures reach 30°C (85°F), with cooler nights aiding acidity retention. Winters are cold and frosty, providing vine dormancy. The 2024 harvest started in February, with early budding after a dry winter and warm spring. Most Chardonnay grapes were harvested before March rains. De Wetshof Estate focuses on site-specific vineyard management. Grapes are picked cool in the morning, fermented in stainless steel, and matured on lees for four months, creating an unwooded wine that reflects the vineyard's terroir.
