Winemaking Because of the 2020 unknowns, we decided to destem most of the fruit and still utilized our favorite approach of a pied de cuve build-up (early harvest grapes) used for harnessing the native yeasts on the site. We kept the skin time relatively short and the ferment warm to bring in more red fruit character and lessen the possibility of smoke tones, which really worked! The resultant lower tannin extraction with loads of savory fruit tones reminds us of some of our favorite Gamay wines and given the challenges, a very nice vintage.
Aging 10 Months French Burgundy oak barrels

The Character

Overall Complex & harmonious
Aromas Holiday spices and ripe, savory strawberries layered over a wet rock like minerality
Mouthfeel Focused on texture over power & concentration
Tasting Notes An absolute stunner that defies the 2020 vintage. There is no smoke influence to be found. We’re incredibly proud of this wine as it stands tall as a reason for diversifying plantings in the Willamette Valley, specifically Gamay as it does so well in our ever-changing climate. The wine features Gamay-distinctive strawberries coated in mineral-laden dark mineral tones. We are just really happy this wine shows there were some really bright spots in 2020.
Pairings Gamay goes with practically everything!
Awards 90pts Wine Enthusiast
Sustainability Organic In Practice, Sustainable In Practice, Minimal Intervention / Augmentation, Natural Fermentation

The Story

Division loves Gamay. Renardiere is one of the single-vineyard Gamay wines, and it is from Redford-Wetle Vineyard, owned by and named after Myron Redford-Wetle, an Oregon legend. He founded Amity Vineyards back in mid-1970s as a part of a group of pioneering young wine entrepreneurs that were building the start of the Oregon wine industry, including the likes of David & Diana Lett, the Casteel & Dudley families, Pat & Joe Campbell and David Adelsheim. His Amity Vineyards produced the first ever single bottling of Gamay in the 1970's. Redford-Wetle has always believed in the potential of Gamay.
Myron and his partner Vikki Wetle planted a small 7.5 acre certified organic vineyard on Jory, Yamhill & Woodburn soils at their home property in the Eola-Amity Hills in 2006, which includes the Gamay Noir Division sourced for the third year of the “Renardière” cuvee. The name means “foxhole” in French, and was a term Myron liked to use when describing the difficulties of being an early Oregonian grape pioneer, consistently having to battle for a little attention and always two steps forward and a step back.
