Historically, March is Women’s History Month— a time to #UpliftAndAdvocate for women in the industry. But the support doesn’t (and shouldn’t) stop there. We called on three Austin wine professionals to give us their expert take on select women-made wines. Enjoy these short videos of Austin’s finest as they swirl, sip and describe three wines that’ll inspire you to continue supporting women in wine all year long.

Biokult Grüner Veltliner made by Angela Michlits

Bordering just on the edge of Hungary in Burgenland, Biokult is a Biodynamic Austrian winery that works with a handful of local growers for grapes. Angela makes the wines and her husband manages operations— both are known for their substantial influence on the region and passion for sustainable production. Angela’s career was initially inspired by her parents’ love for wine, and became fully realized after a stint of winery internships in college.

Monica is a wine buyer and sommelier at the highly delicious Bufalina Due— a Neapolitan pie eatery with a sought-after natural wine program.

Col di Lamo Rosso di Montalcino made by Gianna Neri

Gianna didn’t originally intend on becoming one of the sole women-winemakers working the Sangiovese-laden hills of Montalcino. But after unexpectedly inheriting and dividing her father’s estate with her brother, she fully transformed into “a woman aware of the need to take care of [her] roots, so that they can grow into wings.” Gianna is renowned for an intense devotion to her 11 acres at Col di Lamo, imbueing elegance into traditionally brooding Brunellos, and continueing her legacy through her daughter (Diletta Pieraccini).

Lucas is a sommelier at Hestia & Kalimotxo, warmly renowned, neighboring concepts from the Emmer and Rye hospitality group.

Maysara Sparkling Rosé made by Tahmiene Momtazi

The daughter of Iranian immigrants, you’ll find Tahmiene making Pinots at her family’s thriving Biodynamic winery in McMinnville, Oregon. Tahmiene was awarded #14 on the Wine Spectator’s top 100 list during her second year into the job. She’s supported, too, by the other Maysara women in their family: Matriarch Flora Momtazi wears multiple hats and cooks Persian fare, sister Naseem is the sales manager and Hanna is the events and hospitality manager.

Veronica is a wine buyer and sommelier at Saba Sans— the jovial natural wine shop that lives inside of Bento Picnic in East Austin.
