Abbots & Delaunay

Abbots & Delaunay Image

Set between the steep slopes of the Pyrenees, the foothills of the Cévennes, the Mediterranean coast and the right bank of the Rhone River, the vineyards of the Languedoc benefit from an incredible diversity of soil types and climates.

Laurent Delaunay knows these terroirs like the back of his hand, having travelled extensively throughout the region in search of small plots of old vines growing at high altitudes in some of the region’s finest appellations: Corbières, Minervois, Faugères, and Limoux.

Rounded stones shaped by torrents swollen by powerful Cevenol storms, sandstone, marls, limestone scree and schist compose the sun-baked, windswept terraces which characterize the harsh natural environment in which the grapes that give our wines their powerful character and Mediterranean typicity are the only form of vegetation that thrive.

Inspired by the wealth of the Languedoc-Roussillon’s terroirs, Laurent and winemaker Hilde Chavillot believe in the tremendous potential of its vineyards which can produce wines capable of rivaling the world’s greatest crus.

They have managed to domesticate this untamed power and are pleased to offer wine lovers a unique taste experience with these character wines that feature complexity, balance and freshness, and beautifully packaged in distinctive bottles.

Alberto Longo

Alberto Longo Image

The Winery was created from an idea of Alberto Longo, a professional determined to match the love for his land with his passion for wine, to realize a project able to enhance the value of his native territory: “Daunia”. The Winery is located in Southern Italy and precisely in Lucera, in the North of Puglia, in the middle of an area rich in environmental and historical sites. This area, inhabited since Paleolithic times, witnessed between the 10th and 13th centuries BC, the development of the Daunian civilization, a people from the Agean, whose culture left many traces, like the anthropomorphic steles and other numerous archaeological finds. The area became a Roman province in the 3rd century BC and Lucera its main town, as can be inferred from the splendour of the remains of Roman buildings still present in the area. The advent of the Swabians in the 12th century AD and especially the love of their most important Emperor Frederick II for this land full of oaks, wild boars and foxes, which combine to create an ideal environment for hunting, made Daunia a privileged residence of the court at that time.

“I am so proud to announce the re-launch of E11even Wines. This is a very personal project for me. I feel like these wines have been works-in-progress for a decade or more, only finally jumping from my imagination and into the bottle just this year. These new releases rank amongst the smallest production wines that I have ever released. They are all Estate Grown and crafted with the utmost care and precision. They truly represent the best that we can do here, on the Curtis Estate in the heart of Los Olivos and at the Gravel Pit Estate in Santa Maria. No expense was spared in the farming or the crafting of these stunning wines. In the vineyard, we cherry-picked the best blocks, restricted yields, and used every trick up our sleeves with the singular goal of harvesting the very best fruit that we can grow. In the winery, we took our winemaking efforts to the next level…we took it to 11. We double sorted the grapes to ensure only the best looking berries made it into our fermenters. We aged the wines exclusively in French Oak for 18 months to ensure immense pleasure upon release. The wines are rich and decadent, yet remarkably balanced, pure, and varietally correct. They speak softly of their variety and their origins. They shout, “Drink Me!” Our opening playlist consists of 2014 “Unplugged” Sauvignon Blanc, 2013 Pinot Noir, 2013 Cabernet Franc, 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2013 Petit Verdot. These wines exemplify the Natural, Locavore and Farm-To-Bottle movements. They are grown in Los Olivos, Hand-Crafted in Los Olivos, and sold in Los Olivos by a family that has been here for over 25 years.

We invite you taste our wines…

stemless glass of white wine sitting on a table next to a corkWe have decided to dedicate our newly remodeled Downtown Los Olivos tasting room exclusively to these wines. Andrew Murray Vineyards Club Members are offered complimentary tastings in DTLO as a member perk. I urge you to give them a try, before they are all gone. While you are there, you can browse our updated collection of books and bar accessories, including some of my favorite shakers, shrubs, mixes, and bitters, while listening to vintage vinyl tunes. We look forward to seeing you soon!

The E11even Story…

Most children dream of becoming something exciting when they grow up: a firefighter, an actress, a sports star, a princess, or an astronaut. I was no different. My dream was to be a rock star. Undeterred by the fact that I possessed no musical talent whatsoever, I bellowed into my spoon microphone, played a wicked tennis racquet air-guitar, and sported some sweet 80’s hair.

My buddies and I wiled away countless hours listening to our favorite albums and debating the merits of Led Zeppelin, The Doors, and Kiss. We knew all the lyrics, repeatedly watched all the ‘rockumentaries’, and were MTV addicts. As time rolled by, my rock star dreams waned and my attentions turned to the conventional aspects of adolescence: girls, grades, and irritating my parents.

several wine bottles stacked on top of eachother with the corks facing the camera

My rock-and-roll passion was temporarily reignited by the cultish and devilishly funny rockumentary “This is Spinal Tap”, which I first saw in 1988 as a sophomore in high school. With that one perfect scene, all things that were awesome became an ‘11’; just one better than a ‘10’.

By the time I was a senior, I had traveled extensively in France to help my family glean as much knowledge as we could about the craft of winemaking. We were pulling the cord and parachuting out of Los Angeles to the foothills of sunny Santa Barbara. Together we founded our family winery and vineyard. My passion for winemaking was born, but the steady beat of rock-and-roll still drummed in my being.

I’ve spent 25 years making Rhône-style wines. With each vintage, I work relentlessly to divine the slightest nuances out of my favorite varieties. With This is E11even Wines, I break into new direction and explore the best of the other varieties that we grow here in Los Olivos.

Andrew Rich Wines

Andrew Rich Wines Image

After 20 vintages in Oregon, Andrew Rich is beginning to feel like a veteran. His passion for wine was nurtured not in the fertile soils of the Willamette Valley, however, but in the urban sprawl of New York City, where he once edited the wine column for a national magazine. When the pull of wine became stronger than that of publishing, he headed to Burgundy to study winemaking and viticulture, a move that lead to employment at the small but influential Bonny Doon Vineyard, in California, for nearly six years. His skills honed, Andrew headed to Oregon in 1994 with the quixotic vision of making Rhône-style wines in the Willamette Valley from Columbia Valley grapes. Turns out he was a little ahead of the curve: it wasn't until 2000 – when Syrah, Roussanne, Grenache, and Mourvèdre grapes became available to him – that he was finally able to realize that vision.Meanwhile, he had discovered his love of Pinot Noir, which has since become the more dominant prong of his dual focus. There are three Pinot blends, with fruit sourced from a dozen northern Willamette Valley vineyards: the soft and approachable Prelude; the classic Verbatim, a "grape for grape" translation of vintage and place; and the structured and age-worthy Knife Edge. While the range at Andrew Rich Wines may be broad – in addition to the Pinots and Rhône-style wines the winery is known for Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer dessert wine, and several others – the intent is always to make wines of balance, grace, and sheer deliciousness.

Badger Mountain Vineyard

Badger Mountain Vineyard Image

Our commitment to organic viticulture and wine production begins with our responsibility to the environment, and extends to producing a completely natural product for our customers. We use only organically approved and naturally occurring substances for all vineyard applications ~ this means no chemical insecticides, herbicides, fungicides or synthetic fertilizers. Like farmers for centuries before us, we rely on our experience and the advantageous use of our location, climate, volcanic soil, and organic techniques. For insect control we use predatory insects (that eat the bad bugs) and apply natural soap compounds and other all natural materials. We use an in-row cultivator (hoe plowing) to control weeds in the grape rows and to mow the grass in the center. All grape skins and seeds are composted and returned to the vineyard, and cover crops of vetch and rye are grown between the vine rows for nitrogen and humus.  Our vines are trellised upright, using the Scott-Henry System; this improves sun penetration and air movement which develops character and balance in the grapes. We also utilize crop and shoot thinning to control vigor and limit yields, which increase flavors and aromas in the finished wines.

Bareksten Gin

Bareksten Gin Image

Breathtaking and dramatic. In the mighty Norwegian forests where sunlight rarely penetrates. In lonely landscapes inhabited only by the ‘Hulder’ wood nymphs, which live below the ground surrounded by the roots of old oaks. This is where Bareksten takes its inspiration from. Nordic, natural and organic ingredients form the basis for its unique flavour.

Norwegian herbs, potatoes and berries fight an intense, slow and never-ending battle in extreme environments. Only the strongest and most stubborn survive. Norwegian ingredients, touched only by nature, form the basis for the raw flavors of Bareksten’s botanical spirits.

The Bareksten Gin, distilled in small batches, gives us a very high potent gin with a sublime fruity expression. Bareksten Gin has a traditional base line, but you will find wild blueberries, lingonberries, rhubarb, elderflower, mint and an additional 20 different ingredients. It is perfect with tonic water and for sure a perfect classic, Dry Martini.

Silent trees. Mighty mountains. Raw nature. Mysterious forests. The taste of berries and herbs squeezed by Norwegian hands. Bareksten is the bottled essence of Norwegian nature. Craft has finally found its spirit.

The best sites rest upon massive underground banks of limestone, which deliver vibrancy and edginess to the wines.
