The team at Ernest Vineyards (Coastal Chardonnays & Pinot Noirs) launched Edaphos in 2015 to explore winemaking techniques and varietals that were a departure from the core wines of Ernest.
In 2019 Ernest Vineyards team: Co-Founders Erin Brooks and Todd Gottula, Winemaker Joseph Ryan, and Creative Director Naomi McLeod have nurtured Edaphos to a new stage. They've done so with sincere efforts to create provoking, honest wines that encourage exploration. The Japanese Edo period textile art chosen for the labels celebrate tension in the natural world, where you feel the balance of depth and weightlessness.

Philosophy

The Greek word Edaphos translates as dirt, soil, or ground; we chose this word because these wines are of their place. At Edaphos, we produce unique, small-lot, single-vineyard bottlings of remarkable varietals in California. Our vineyards are located throughout Sonoma and Mendocino counties.
We start with sustainable, organic, and biodynamic farming in the vineyards, continue with minimal intervention in the cellar, and share full transparency of process. In the cellar, the juice is guided along without the use of sulfur or new oak. They ferment with native yeast and a long, slow natural malolactic. A combination of concrete, stainless steel, and neutral barrels and puncheons allow the wines to highlight their provenance and natural varietal characteristics. These wines are made with intention and with curiosity; we encourage all to try them in the same light.

Biography

Amongst the full Ernest Vineyards team involved, winemaker Joseph Ryan is spearheading this new edition of Edaphos wine program. He believes wines are made in the vineyard, and thus imperative to partner with growers who align with our philosophies of sustainability and stewardship.
