Beaumont

Beaumont is a charming, family-run farm and winery situated in the quaint Overberg Village of Bot River. The farm is home to the region’s oldest wine cellar and is steeped in history dating back to the 1700’s. In 2004, Sebastian Beaumont, having honed his skills working in vineyards, took over the reins in the cellar and has continued to build the Beaumont reputation. The flagship Chenin Blanc and Hope Marguerite has received Platter 5-Star ratings 12 times with the last nine consecutive vintages receiving five stars.

Founded in 1974 when the Beaumont family purchased the farm, the first wine under the Beaumont label was produced by Jayne Beaumont in 1994. The 490-hectare property includes 30 hectares of vines, 6 hectares of pears, 3 hectares of almonds, and some olive trees, surrounded by protected natural vegetation. The vineyards, situated on ancient shale soils, produce elegant, complex wines that capture the essence of the region.

Beaumont cultivates varieties such as Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, Mourvedre, and Shiraz, along with smaller amounts of Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Tinta Barocca, Petit Verdot, and Malbec.

Biography

Sebastian Beaumont was born to make Chenin Blanc. His parents, Jayne and Roaul, started the family wine business when they purchased an old wine farm back in 1974. Thirty years later, Sebastian would make his mark as a Chenin Blanc aficionado. He received eight 5-star ratings for Hope Marguerite, earning him the nickname “The Chenin Dude”.
Always having a passion for wine, fishing and surfing,
Sebastian initially thought he wanted to chase the waves and become a Marine Biologist. After leaving school, he met Arthur Pillman who was a retired engineer with a love for Burgundy, and had his own property up the road from Beaumont’s winery. Sebastian worked with Arthur, making
his first wine which was a small amount of Pinotage. He was hooked ever since. After finishing his degree in Oenology at Elsenburg Agricultual Training Institute, Sebastian joined the family’s wine estate in as its Viticulturist in 2002, working alongside his father. For the next two years, he would spend his time changing some of the farm’s viticultural practices.
Sebastian completed his first vintage in 2004 as the solo winemaker of Beaumont Family Wines.
When he isn’t drinking a glass of Schäfer – Fröhlich
Stromberg Riesling or on his board enjoying the salt, the cold and the peace, he’s producing wines that proudly express their Bot River origin. His drive has resulted in the creation of one of the benchmark Chenins in South Africa, the Beaumont Hope Marguerite. Sebastian is also a member of the Cape Winemakers Guild where he creates unique wines
for their auctions, allowing him to express his creativity and explore new avenues in his craft.
Along with his wife, Nici, he aims to build on their family business committed to making their environment better, improving the lives of the people who work for them and the community in the town that their vineyards surround.
