Bodegas Ochoa

Since 1845 the Ochoa family has been making wine in Navarra, Spain, even further back with receipts dating back to the 1300's signed by the Queen of Navarra! Now with the 6th generation at the helm, daughters Adriana and Beatriz Ochoa continue to push the envelope making exquisite wines that deeply express the uniqueness of the Navarra region. Adriana Ochoa trained in both Bordeaux and Australia and has been awarded ‘Best Young Female Winemaker in Spain’ by using the momentum of her father’s work, she continues to push Bodega Ochoa forward with the help of her sister Beatriz who is CEO. Their 145 acres of vineyards and olive orchards are farmed according to European organic certification guidelines (certified as of 2018) along with the use of sustainable agricultural and winemaking processes. Navarra is often overlooked lying between two power houses, Rioja and Bordeaux, but offers best of both these worlds with powerfully elegant wines that reveal the beauty this region holds.

Philosophy

Bodega Ochoa has placed focus and effort into R&D with a clear aim in mind: to keep a natural balance between tradition and making the most of new research in technology, development, and innovation that promotes harmony in the vineyard and minimal intervention in the winery.

In 1994, Bodegas Ochoa became the first winery in Spain to undertake an R&D Project focused on sustainable and organic efforts. Ever since then, they have maintained a steady program of investment and experimentation, with undiminishing respect and commitment to integrated agriculture. Since 2015 they have actively been in conversion to organic certification for both grapes and olives with the collaboration of the CPAEN. (Control Inspection of Organic Certification)

Some of their projects include; water stress control mechanisms, irrigation, and vegetation covers, late-harvest small-grain Moscatel, MdO 5.5% low alcohol sparkling wine, Zero carbon footprint, yeast selection from our vineyard,s and much more.

Years of work, research, and experimentation have taught them that careful viticulture and low yields are the only way to achieve a great wine.

Their innovating spirit is never at odds with allegiance to their legacy. The current vineyards are the offspring of the old vines of their ancestors. Research has enabled them to use vegetative multiplication on a selection of the best strains in order to continue producing the quality of wine required to carry the Ochoa name.

Health and ecology are two more basic issues for Bodegas Ochoa: practicing organic viticulture, which means that they treat the soil in the same way as their grandparents but using the latest technology in doing so.

Adriana has selected 4 yeasts to ferment their grapes from a family of 160 yeasts present in our vineyard. Using a multiplier of these yeasts that are used at harvest to ferment the wines with the most original character and respectful intentions.

Biography

Bodegas Ochoa is one of Spain’s most dynamic wineries. Family owned and run since 1845, it is based in Olite, a small-town, and capital of Navarra, where the King had the summer residence in medieval times and Ochoa was the wine supplier. We keep an invoice from 1370.

OCHOA is a Family winery whose tradition goes back to 6 generations. The 5th generation is based on the marriage of Javier Ochoa and Marivi Aleman. Javier was born in Pamplona, some distance from the vineyards. He studied enology in Requena where he qualified as a Master Winemaker before continuing his studies in Madrid and Bordeaux. The strongest influence to Javier and the Ochoa Wine was the 11 years Javier spent as Director of Enology at the Estacion de Viticultura y Enologis de Navarra (EVENA) and the 6th are their daughters Adriana Ochoa and Beatriz Ochoa. Nowadays the winery is run by the 2 sisters Adriana and Beatriz.

Adriana is responsible for winemaking and quality control. Beatriz is responsible for general management of the company and Sales Manager. The objective of the family is to make the best grapes in their 145 hectares of vineyard in order to make wonderful wines in the winery that above all, stay true and authentic to the region and the Ochoa name. Bodegas Ochoa looks after their wine in a customized way, from the terroir to the bottle. Ochoa also owns 58 hectares of olive trees to make extra virgin olive oil, the highest quality in this product category, with Arbequina and Koroneiki olives.

Convinced that quality starts in the vineyard Adriana has committed to certified Organic practices as outlined by the EU standards, but has always used minimal intervention and sustainability in the vineyard.
