Casas del Bosque

Casas del Bosque is located 70 km from Santiago, the capital of Chile, and 30 km from the port of Valparaíso, (UNESCO World Heritage Site). In 1993 the Italian-descendant Cúneo family established the winery in the Casablanca Valley, one of the coolest spots in the area. The large old pines and olive trees that populate the landscape, as well as the small white houses of adobe that give the valley its name, defined the name of ""Casas del Bosque”: literally, ""Houses in the Woods"".

We strive to position Casablanca as a worldwide referent when it comes to cool climate wines.

Casablanca has had a strong winemaking tradition for quite some time; however, it wasn't until the late nineties that its potential for white varieties, as well as cool climate reds, became a breakthrough in the Chilean winemaking scene.

The valley has some unique qualities when it comes to climate. The weather is heavily influenced by coastal breezes that cool down the valley, in the form of morning mysts and afternoon winds all year long.

One of Casa del Bosque’s biggest strengths is its soil. In the hills, red clay composites of volcanic origin sit on top of decomposed granite layers formed 110 million years ago beneath the Pacific Ocean. This soil gives our wines the unique characteristic of mineral, sea salt flavors.

Philosophy

The constant search for excellence defines Casas del Bosque philosophy. All the work that goes on behind the scenes at the vineyard is thanks to the effort and dedication of our team who take care of every single detail. Our terroir combines the optimum conditions of soil, climate and vineyard management to develop wines with unique character.

An important part of our philosophy is our commitment to the environment. Taking care of our terroir and the resources that enable us to produce quality wines is a task that we take very seriously, and we work hard to reduce our impact on the planet.

Because of our investment in the most advanced viticulture technology and our exceptionally high-quality grapes, we are able to assure the high standard of our wines. We take care to let our vines grow with minimal human intervention and strictly control the production and treatment of our vineyards. Simply put, we concentrate on “Quality instead of quantity.” It is not in our interest to produce huge volumes, just the best wines.

An essential part of our philosophy is our team, a group of hard-working people who love what they do. They are passionate about wine and strive for excellence in winemaking. The work and efforts of Casas del Bosque staff allow the quality of our wines.

We have recently started working with Mr. Sam Harrop MW as a consultant. The concept of wines ""with a sense of place"" he discusses in his book ""Authentic Wine: Toward Natural and Sustainable Winemaking"" (co-written with Jamie Goode), fits perfectly with what we are trying to do at Casas del Bosque.

Biography

In September 2016, Meinard Jan Bloem arrived to Casas del Bosque as Head Winemaker. Born and raised in the Netherlands, he studied Agronomy in Chile, and then obtained a Master’s Degree in Viticulture and Enology from the Research Institutes of Montpellier, France and Geisenheim, Germany, before returning to Chile in 2009. He has worked for several years as both grape grower and winemaker before joining our team.

His knowledge and experience with different regions, wine styles and winemaking techniques borders on the encyclopedic. Outside the vineyard however, he enjoys the simple pleasures of spending time with his dogs in Casablanca, and moving around on his motorbike.
