Codorniu
Codorníu’s story begins in the heart of Catalonia, where wine has been part of the cultural fabric for centuries. Established in 1551 by Jaume Codorníu, it holds the distinction of being Spain’s oldest winemaking enterprise—and one of the oldest in the world. But Codorníu is far more than a historical footnote. It is the birthplace of Cava, a symbol of innovation and perseverance, and a beacon of Spanish heritage on the global stage.
The modern Codorníu legacy was forged in 1659, when Anna Codorníu married Miquel Raventós, uniting two of Spain’s most influential winemaking families. Their descendants would go on to change the course of sparkling wine history. In 1872, inspired by techniques used in Champagne, Josep Raventós produced Spain’s first bottle-fermented sparkling wine using native grapes—Macabeo, Xarel·lo, and Parellada. With that, Cava was born, and a new tradition took root in Penedès.
As demand for their wines grew, so too did the need for a space that matched their ambition. In the late 19th century, Manuel Raventós commissioned renowned Catalan Modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch—protégé of Gaudí—to design Codorníu’s iconic cellars in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia. Completed in 1915, the winery is a masterpiece of architectural grandeur and practical design, blending art and function. Today, this “Cathedral of Cava” is recognized as a Spanish national monument and remains a pilgrimage site for lovers of wine, design, and history alike.
Innovation has always been at the heart of Codorníu. In the 1980s, they were the first to incorporate Chardonnay into Cava production, expanding the style’s complexity and appeal. They later introduced the first 100% Pinot Noir rosé Cava, and more recently, a non-alcoholic sparkling wine under the Codorníu Zero label—offering celebration without compromise. Every wine is crafted under the meticulous eye of Technical Director Bruno Colomer, named Best Sparkling Winemaker at the 2021 Bacchus Awards, who ensures each bottle reflects both the land and the legacy of Codorníu.
Today, Codorníu produces over 60 million bottles annually and exports around the globe, all while remaining fiercely committed to quality and sustainability. As part of Grupo Raventós Codorníu, the winery earned B Corp certification in 2025, reaffirming its leadership in environmental and social responsibility. From the rolling vineyards of Penedès to the tables of wine lovers everywhere, Codorníu continues to honor its nearly five-century legacy—one glass at a time.
