The De Wet family's winemaking heritage dates back to 1694 when the first De Wets arrived at the Cape. Today, brothers Johann (CEO) and Peter (CFO) continues this legacy who was preceded by their grandfather, Johann and father Danie, the pioneer of Chardonnay in South Africa. De Wetshof wines reflect the unique soils of the Estate and meticulous attention to detail, while state-of-the-art technology ensures that the cellar work enhances the natural gifts of the vineyards.

Biography

Johann de Wet – CEO & Co-Owner

Johann de Wet, CEO and third-generation co-owner of De Wetshof Estate, is a passionate advocate for South African Chardonnay. Guided by the philosophy, “We make Chardonnay, and the rest is a floral arrangement,” Johann has dedicated his career to championing this varietal as South Africa’s premier white wine.

Growing up on De Wetshof Estate under the mentorship of his father, renowned winemaker Danie de Wet, Johann developed a deep connection to the vineyards and winemaking process. Early exposure to the wine industry gave him invaluable insight and connections, shaping his future as a leader in South African viticulture. After studying marketing at Stellenbosch University and gaining hands-on experience at wineries in Europe, Johann joined the family business full-time in 2005.

As CEO since 2017, Johann oversees De Wetshof’s vineyards and leads the estate’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. A member of the esteemed Commanderie de Bordeaux and chairperson of the South African Chardonnay Forum, Johann is a driving force behind the Robertson Valley’s reputation as a world-class Chardonnay region. His dedication to excellence ensures De Wetshof continues to honor its heritage while advancing South Africa’s global standing in wine.
