Domaine Jean Marc Boillot

Jean-Marc Boillot was one of the younger generation in Burgundy who was determined to improve his family’s wines. In 1984, after vinifying 13 vintages at the family’s domaine Henri Boillot, Jean-Marc walked out in protest, intent on producing highly concentrated, rich, and ripe wines. He became the winemaker for Olivier Leflaive for the next four years, and at the same time produced wines from five acres of vineyards, bottled under his own label. The wines impressed Boillot’s grandfather, who bequest half his vineyard to JeanMarc. Boillot runs his domaine from his grandfather Henri Boillot’s house and cellars in the village of Pommard. JeanMarc’s maternal grandfather was the late Etienne Sauzet, from whom he also inherited exceptional vineyards. He has invested heavily in the Mâconnais region as well. Today, JeanMarc is joined by his children, Lydie and Benjamin, in the family business.

Biography

Jean-Marc Boillot is a grandson of Etienne Sauzet, and was previously winemaker for Olivier Leflaive. With that mixture of winemaking pedigree and experience it comes as no surprise that Jean-Marc Boillot makes sensational wines. He is a rare figure in Burgundy, a winemaker who produces both red and white wines of the highest quality. Jean-Marc Boillot set up his own Domaine in 1985. He began with rented vines in Pommard, later adding vines in Volnay and Pommard from his grandfather’s side in 1988 and then white varietals, a one-third share of Domaine Etienne Sauzet, from his grandmother in 1991. Today he is assisted by his daughter Lydie and son Benjamin.
