Serendipity Wines, Icon Series - Merry Edwards Wineries
Serendipity Wines presents The Icon Series with Interviews from Merry Edwards, Hudson and Kapcsandy.
Merry Edwards approaches life with graceful intensity. Now in the fifth decade of her winemaking career, Merry has earned the universal respect of winemaking peers, grape growers and scholars.
At home in the Russian River Valley since 1977, Merry Edwards has explored its hills, pockets, slopes and hollows, discovering small sites where choosing the right rootstock, clone and farming techniques can produce exceptional grapes. This led her in 1996 to purchase land in the Sebastopol Hills region of Russian River Valley.
An acknowledged expert in viticulture as well as winemaking, Merry also maintains close working relationships with the dedicated property owners, allowing her to influence the farming of Olivet Lane, Klopp Ranch and a small stable of excellent Sauvignon Blanc vineyards.
In 2019, Maison Louis Roederer acquired the Merry Edwards Winery. Frédéric Rouzaud, owner and President, is decidedly focused on ensuring continuity and adhering to the core values by which both wineries are connected: producing wines emblematic of their terroirs, all the while pushing the boundaries of land stewardship. ""In Frédéric, I have found a true soulmate to pass on the company to which I have devoted my life these past 21 years. I know my legacy is in good hands for the years to come as a member of the Maison Louis Roederer family.""
Philosophy
"For Ken and me, sustainability is a way of life. Thinking long term about the health of our land, and the future of our family, is embedded in all that we do. In fact, in 2017 we became a Certified California Sustainable Winery, and all of our vineyards were certified in the same year."
- Merry Edwards
“The wines are 75 percent made when the grapes arrive at the winery door. My job is just to not screw things up!”
- Merry Edwards
Biography
One of California’s first woman winemakers, Merry Edwards began her career at Mount Eden Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1974. She went on to become the founding winemaker at Matanzas Creek in 1977 and remained there until 1984. For the next decade, Merry consulted for numerous wineries, large and small, in Oregon and many diverse appellations of California.
In 1997, family and friends joined Merry to found Merry Edwards Winery, with a focus on producing Pinot Noirs with a sense of place from Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast. In 2008, she and her husband, Ken Coopersmith, completed their winery on the site of Coopersmith Vineyard, and since then they have continued to produce acclaimed Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.
In 2015, Merry Edwards chose Heidi von der Mehden to be her associate winemaker. Working closely with Merry, Heidi has been involved in all aspects of the winemaking process, learning new skills along the way. At the beginning of the 2018 harvest, Merry announced that Heidi would succeed her as winemaker, becoming only the second person to hold that position at Merry Edwards Winery. Heidi looks forward to helping the winery not only continue to grow but to thrive for years to come.
