Montellori

120 years of Style and Tradition

The Villa and the surrounding vineyards were purchased in 1895 by Giuseppe Nieri, who through the important profits made from the leather trade, decided to invest in agriculture. Initially the wine was produced for domestic use, later with Mario Nieri, his son, he continued the development of the company through the purchase of additional land, always planting Sangiovese and Trebbiano vineyards. In the 1940s, the barrels previously used for fermentation were replaced by vitrified concrete tanks, and the practice of refining the Chianti Montellori has remained the same until today without ever changing the appearance of the Style and Identity of the Products and of the Company.
The bottling of Montellori wine with its own name and the use of its own label began in 1950. The greatest contribution to the development of Montellori comes with Giuseppe Nieri (1929-1998). He expanded the vineyards to its current 50 hectares, and replaced equipment in the cellar, introducing temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and oak barrels, bringing complexity and greater finesse. Giuseppe Nieri had a particular passion for white wine, and in addition to the well-known grape varieties such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon, he started an important experimentation program with lesser-known grapes at the time, but very interesting, such as Viognier. This variety is now used for the house white. After precise studies and calculations made well in advance, the French varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah were planted. The decade 1985-1995 was for Montellori an exciting period marked by curiosity, constant experimentation, creative impulse and great discoveries. After the presentation of the first vintage of Montellori Brut Classic Method Millesimato Sparkling Wine, the ambition for Quality and the Search for the Personality of their Wines has never stopped. Alessandro Nieri began leadership of Montellori in 1998, after a long period of shared responsibility with his father. The proposal of the products is reorganized through the choice of producing wines capable of enhancing the continuous attention to Viticulture, to the understanding of the characteristics and potential of each vineyard: The conscience of the individual vineyard can express its territory through hard work and professionalism . Fattoria Montellori celebrated the 120th anniversary of the family business in 2015: 4 generations of wine producers with the same passion in common: to produce wines with true personality, which express both the philosophy of the family and the character of the terroir.
