Rene Barbier

In an arid and magical place, French monks discovered “Eden’s Ladder”: Escala Dei (12th century). It was here that they made the Lord’s wine. In this very same arid place, 800 years later, a young French woman and a Catalan man found the place of their dreams: CLOS MOGADOR (1979). Isabelle and René: A two-step between the dancer and the sensitivity and determination of a poetic philosopher. She artfully designs the future, whilst he squeezes out the earth’s fruit! The Priorat grew! The same vintage saw how both the Priorat and our son, René grew up together. It is no wonder his skill and the region’s magic have worked together to make this innovative wine, which at the same time is traditional and known as: CLOS MOGADOR! Wine can make dreams come true! Seeds scattered by the wind, give life to vineyards and brothers such as Christian, work the lands of flowers and vines, whilst Anderson and and our grandchildren presage generations of bottles of CLOS MOGADOR spanning the globe.

Philosophy

We are always looking for a balance between wild and cultivated land in the Priorat, this is a lifetime struggle, and after many years we managed to change the way we look at things, not only myself but my whole team, twelve people who work next to me every day, fighting for a better world … free of chemicals, waste or single-crop farming. All this would not be possible without my team. Little by little we can build a better and more respectful world, because in the end small things are the ones that matter the most.

To us, the most important thing is the land, and making sure that the grapes grow in the most natural way possible. Our objective is to achieve balanced fields than can act with freedom. Christian Barbier Meyer is leading these efforts.

To achieve that we work with biodiversity and regenerative Biodynamic agriculture.

Biography

René Barbier, descendent of a renowned family of French winemakers came to the Priorat when the wines of the area were completely unknown. He was the first of a group of pioneers who made the New Priorats and has worked successfully towards recovering the region’s unique terroir.

In 1979, he purchased a small plot of vineyard in the village of Gratallops which he planted with more Grenache, Carignan and some Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. This was the beginning of his Clos Mogador Com Tu project. It also became Catalonia’s first officially recognised “Vi de Finca” (roughly this is a single vineyard, domain bottled wine certification and is a very prestigious qualification in Spain) which has added to the DOCa. Priorat’s fame. “Vi de Finca” guarantees that all grapes used to make the wine have been sourced exclusively from the Clos Mogador Com Tu single vineyard for at least the last five years.

A few years later, René purchased a further 20 hectares in the guise of Manyetes (vi de vila Gratallops) and Nelin (a white wine). Forever obsessed by terroir, René strives to reveal the classic characteristics of this wine region and confesses that he has a weakness for Grenache
