Duchman Family Winery Walkthrough Tour
Founded in 2006 by Drs. Lisa and Stan Duchman, Duchman Family Winery emerged from a vision to bring world-class winemaking to the Texas Hill Country through Mediterranean grape varieties naturally suited to the Texas climate. This pioneering approach recognized that varieties from Italy, Spain, and the broader Mediterranean region could not only survive but thrive in Texas's challenging growing conditions, all while maintaining a strict commitment to using 100% Texas-grown grapes.
Dave Reilly, who joined Duchman in 2006 and became head winemaker in 2008, established a distinctive winemaking approach that has come to define Duchman's acclaimed style. His guiding philosophy—"Make wines that are true to their varietal character using the highest quality grapes grown only in Texas"—shapes every aspect of production at the winery.
What truly distinguishes Duchman is their extraordinary commitment to time. While many wineries rush to market, Duchman's world-class extended aging program keeps their red wines in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 4-5 years, followed by at least 12 months of bottle aging before release. This patient approach allows naturally bold varieties like Aglianico to integrate their tannins beautifully while preserving their essential character, and gives all their red wines the opportunity to develop complexity, elegance and balance that would be impossible to achieve with shorter aging periods or absence of real oak barrels. Equally important, this methodical process ensures remarkable consistency in their wines vintage after vintage, providing customers with the reliable quality they've come to expect. Meanwhile, their white wines are crafted to showcase vibrant freshness and varietal expression through 100% stainless steel fermentation.
The winery's success is built on enduring relationships with their dedicated growers on the Texas High Plains. Their long-standing connections with families like the Oswalds, who have grown Aglianio and Montepulciano for Duchman since 2008, and the Binghams, who grow Duchman's celebrated Vermentino, exemplify the collaborative spirit driving Texas wine forward.
Every bottle of Duchman wine represents not just the remarkable dialogue between Old World traditions and Texas innovation, but the human connections that make wine meaningful—between winemaker and grower, between the land and those who tend it, and ultimately, between the wine and those who share it during life's memorable moments. The winery's recent partnership with Serendipity Wines in 2025 expands their reach throughout Texas, allowing more consumers to experience these distinctive expressions of Texas terroir at accessible prices.
Philosophy
Our philosophy rests on patience, authenticity, and connection—three fundamental pillars that guide everything we do at Duchman Family Winery.
Patience forms the cornerstone of our winemaking approach. Our extended aging program—with wines spending 4-5 years in a combination of French and American oak followed by significant bottle aging—reflects our commitment to allowing each wine the time it needs to fully develop. We resist the industry pressure for quick turnover, instead embracing the slow transformation that brings integration, complexity, and balance to our wines. This patient methodology transforms powerful varieties like Aglianico into elegant expressions of their true character, whose naturally high tannins require time to reveal the wine's full potential.
We believe exceptional wines emerge at the intersection of art and science, where winemaking expertise guides each variety toward its fullest expression. Our approach balances technical precision with creative intuition, allowing us to highlight the distinctive character of each variety while respecting its natural tendencies. This is not about minimal intervention, but rather about purposeful, skilled guidance that brings out the best in our wines while maintaining their authentic voice.
Our devotion to place manifests in our exclusive use of 100% Texas-grown grapes and our focus on varieties that genuinely express themselves in our unique terroir. We believe that varieties with Mediterranean heritage are uniquely suited to thrive in Texas soils and climate. Rather than forcing international varieties ill-suited to our environment, we champion grapes that can authentically express both their varietal character and their Texas origin. This commitment to Texas terroir extends to our relationships with growers on the Texas High Plains, where the cooler temperatures and "continental" climate provide ideal conditions for these varieties.
The human element—the personal connections—drives everything we do. The long-term relationships we've cultivated with dedicated growers like the Bingham and Oswald families exemplify this philosophy, built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to quality over nearly two decades. These relationships have been essential to our success, allowing us to consistently source the exceptional fruit needed to create elegant, world-class wines. We view each bottle not just as a product, but as a potential catalyst for human connection, enhancing conversations, celebrations, and quiet moments of appreciation.
Our preference for minimal new oak (using approximately 10% new oak in our aging program) reflects our desire to let the fruit and terroir expressions shine through while still benefiting from the structural elements and gentle oxidation that barrel aging provides. This approach creates wines of remarkable elegance and finesse that honor both the heritage of the varieties we work with and the unique character imparted by Texas soil and climate.
Our mission is to craft outstanding Texas wines at accessible prices, making exceptional wine experiences available to more people. Our recent distribution partnership with Serendipity Wines furthers this goal, bringing our wines to more restaurants and retailers across Texas while maintaining our unwavering commitment to quality and consistency.
At Duchman, we're not simply making Texas versions of Mediterranean wines; we're creating elegant, distinctive wines that authentically showcase the dialogue between Old World traditions and the Texas terroir—a balance that defines every bottle we produce.
Biography
Duchman Family Winery has established itself as a pioneer of Mediterranean varieties in the Texas Hill Country since its founding in 2006 by Drs. Lisa and Stan Duchman. With a vision to create world-class wines that showcase the unique dialogue between Old World traditions and Texas terroir, the winery has built its reputation on patience, authenticity, and a commitment to 100% Texas-grown grapes. Under the direction of head winemaker Dave Reilly since 2008, Duchman has garnered significant recognition in prestigious international competitions, confirming the extraordinary potential of Mediterranean varieties in the Texas landscape.
Dave Reilly's journey at Duchman began in 2006, working under the guidance of veteran Texas winemaker Mark Penna. This apprenticeship provided the foundation for Dave's winemaking philosophy, which combines respect for traditional techniques with a deep appreciation for Texas's unique terroir and the artistry of fine winemaking.
After assuming the role of head winemaker in 2008, Dave established a distinctive approach that has come to define Duchman's acclaimed style. Working closely with proprietors Drs. Lisa and Stan Duchman, who have supported his vision from the beginning, Dave has brought the founders' dream of world-class Texas winemaking to fruition. The Duchmans' unwavering commitment to quality and patience has allowed Dave the freedom to develop his meticulous approach, creating a perfect partnership that continues to drive the winery's success.
Central to the winery's philosophy is the belief that wines should express their true varietal character while reflecting the place where they're grown. Dave's mantra—"Make wines that are true to their varietal character using the highest quality grapes grown only in Texas"—guides every decision in the vineyard and cellar, a vision fully endorsed by the Duchmans.
Duchman has pioneered one of the most significant extended aging programs in Texas winemaking. Their world-class approach keeps red wines like Aglianico and Montepulciano in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 4-5 years, followed by additional bottle aging before release. This patient methodology allows naturally tannic varieties to develop integration and complexity while preserving their essential character—a commitment to time that stands in contrast to industry trends favoring quick turnover.
At the intersection of art and science, Dave's winemaking expertise guides each variety toward its fullest expression. His technical knowledge, refined over nearly two decades of Texas winemaking, combines with an intuitive understanding of how each variety responds to different techniques. This balanced approach allows Dave to highlight the distinctive character of Duchman wines while respecting their natural tendencies and the unique imprint of Texas terroir.
Understanding that great wine begins in the vineyard, Duchman has cultivated enduring relationships with their dedicated growers on the Texas High Plains. By working closely with growers who share their commitment to quality and belief in the potential of Mediterranean varieties in Texas, Duchman ensures consistent access to the exceptional fruit needed for world-class winemaking.
Duchman's Vermentino stands as a testament to collaboration and perseverance. Beginning in 2007 with just two bins of grapes from Cliff and Betty Bingham, it has evolved into one of Duchman's signature offerings, establishing Duchman as a premier producer of this Mediterranean white variety in the United States. Even after devastating freezes, including the 2019 event that required replanting, patience and commitment to quality never wavered. The vineyards rebounded to produce exceptional vintages, including the remarkable 2023 vintage that garnered prestigious awards in major competitions, ultimately showcasing the best of what Texas viticulture and expert winemaking can achieve.
Dave's preference for minimal new oak influence reflects his desire to let the fruit and terroir expressions shine through while still providing the structural elements and gentle oxidation that barrel aging offers. This approach honors both the Mediterranean heritage of the varieties and the unique character imparted by Texas soil and climate.
Over the years, Duchman's commitment to quality has earned the winery numerous accolades across international competitions, validating their belief in the potential of Texas wine when approached with patience, expertise, and respect for terroir. These distinctions recognize their ability to create wines that authentically showcase the remarkable dialogue between Old World traditions and Texas innovation, fulfilling the Duchmans' original vision for their winery.
Beyond the technical aspects of winemaking, what truly drives Duchman Family Winery is the connection between their wines and the meaningful moments in people's lives. There's profound satisfaction in knowing that bottles patiently crafted over years become part of celebrations, milestones, and memories—creating bonds that transcend the wine itself and giving deeper meaning to their work.
Through their dedication to patience, authenticity, and connection, Duchman Family Winery continues to elevate not just their own reputation but the entire Texas wine industry, proving that with the right varieties, proper growing techniques, and a commitment to excellence, Texas can produce wines that stand proudly on the world stage—a testament to both Dave Reilly's skill as a winemaker and the Duchmans' visionary approach as proprietors.
