Since 1890, we have been sharing our passion for wine and the ongoing search for excellence for six generations. A know-how that has become an international benchmark in the elaboration of high quality wines. Respecting the personality and character of the three prestigious wine regions (Rioja, Rías Baixas and Ribera del Duero) where we are present with our four wineries, betting on tradition and innovation, on an exceptional own vineyard that today exceeds 800 hectares, always seeking the harmony, balance and sophistication of the great wines of the world,... It is the fruit of our history.

The origins of La Rioja Alta, S.A. date back to July 10, 1890, when five families came together in the Barrio de la Estación, in Haro (La Rioja), with a shared goal: to produce high-quality wines in the newly emerging Denominación de Origen Rioja. This moment marked the foundation of what would become one of Spain’s most respected and enduring wineries.

From the very beginning, the company stood out for its commitment to crafting wines with elegance, balance, and aging potential. Traditional methods have always been at the heart of its philosophy—many of which are still in use today. For example, the winery maintains its own cooperage, where it makes and toasts its barrels by hand. It also continues to practice manual racking of its wines, using candlelight to ensure precision, and allows for extended aging in both barrel and bottle, often far exceeding the minimum requirements of the Rioja classification.

Throughout its long history, La Rioja Alta, S.A. has successfully combined deep respect for tradition with a constant drive for quality and innovation. It has made continuous investments in modern winemaking technology and in rigorous quality control systems, always with the aim of improving without losing the essence that defines its wines.

Its most iconic labels—Gran Reserva 890, Gran Reserva 904, Viña Ardanza, Viña Arana, and Viña Alberdi—have become references not only in Rioja, but internationally, showcasing the winery’s ability to produce age-worthy wines that retain freshness, complexity, and elegance over decades.

In the 1990s and 2000s, the company expanded its horizons beyond Rioja. It acquired Torre de Oña in Rioja Alavesa in 1995, with the aim of producing estate-driven wines of great personality. In 2000, it purchased Lagar de Fornelos in Rías Baixas, home to its acclaimed Albariño wines under the Lagar de Cervera brand. Finally, in 2000 it also began work in Ribera del Duero, where the Áster winery was established in Anguix (Burgos), designed in the château style and surrounded by its own vineyards.

Today, La Rioja Alta, S.A. is much more than a historic Rioja winery. It is a prestigious wine group, still family-owned, that exports to over 80 countries, always with the same philosophy: to craft wines of the highest quality, with authenticity, elegance, and longevity. It remains a benchmark in Spanish winemaking, widely respected for its unwavering dedication to excellence and tradition.
