The Story

Donnachadh, pronounced Donna-Ka, is an 4th century Scottish Gaelic name ancestral to modern Clan Duncan. The clan motto, disce pati, means "learn to endure.”
Donnachadh is an organically farmed vineyard in the heart of the Santa Rita Hills AVA of Santa Barbara County. The property was planted to vines in 2013, the culmination of a dream for owners Drew and Laurie Duncan. Chardonnay at Donnachadh is planted in two distinct zones allowing a complex blend of grapes uncommon for a single vineyard. In this wine, Wente and Clone 76 fruit is from a flat riverside terrace in the Santa Ynez River valley with fine sandy loam soil overlying coarse river gravel. Clone 4 grapes are from the top of the windy hillside block where vines struggle to thrive in thin, rocky soil over marine bedrock.
Grapes were picked by hand at ripeness levels chosen to provide bright acidity and fruit flavors. At the winery, each batch of whole cluster grapes was basket pressed after light foot treading while still cool. This Chardonnay fermented naturally in french oak barrels, and then aged on lees for 11 months before bottling. Additional warm spice notes come from 25% new oak barrels.
The 2017 vintage in Santa Barbara County was marked by a rainy spring, warm summer, and a hot spell during harvest. At Donnachadh, we adapted well during the growing season and were able to pick grapes close to our target ripeness, so avoided adverse effects throughout. 2017 was the vineyard’s second ever harvest, and the first year that the top hillside block of Clone 4 Chardonnay bore fruit. This is our first Estate Chardonnay to have been released for sale.
Harvested: August 24th&29th, September 9th&21st, 2017
