The Story
Grenache Blanc, while not considered “obscure”, is still not widely understood by consumers. Hailing first from Northeast Spain as a mutation of the red Grenache Noir grape, and eventually migrating to various regions in the Rhone Valley—especially in the South—it is often shrugged off as a blender, or at its best, the Rhone’s answer to Pinot Gris. Of course, this is not the case when it comes to our approach to Grenache Blanc at Skinner; this varietal, with all its complexities, takes no back seat to Viognier or Marsanne/Roussane blends. Our goal is to celebrate Grenache Blanc by crafting a wine with a foot in the past and a foot in the present; the marriage of rustic minerality and bizarre floral-salinity, with deep texture and nervy poise. The vineyards blocks were meticulously farmed; the goal being to produce a standalone Grenache Blanc that would be both approachable and age-able. The grapes were cold pressed as individual lots. The juice saw no sulfur, as we allowed for a “brown-out” process to take place. The oxidation of the juice over the course of several days and subsequent racking off of gross lees offers an opportunity for any harsh, bitter phenolics to drop out, yielding softer, clarified juice for a gentle but highly reductive native fermentation. Fermentation took place largely in concrete and French oak barrels.
