Tasting Notes A flirty, mouthwatering expression of El Dorado. Fresh raspberry and orange peel dominate the aromatics, along with playful notes of sassafras. Crunchy and vivacious across the palate with crushed cranberry, sweet plum, and a whisper of passion fruit. Fun, flirty and mouthwatering, the Native can be your food’s best friend, or simply a way to jazz up a Wednesday evening.

The Story

Part of what makes El Dorado County special is its radiant terroir, which reveals itself best in the loving hands of wine growers and makers who truly understand and adore our wild country. Another part of what makes El Dorado special, and moreover Skinner, is the vast array of varietals we have to work with. More interesting, still, even in a “kitchen sink” blend of varietals ranging from familiar to esoteric, said terroir shines through just the same. We wanted to make something unique to Skinner, and we wanted it to be a wine we could share with the world. An approachable blend that incorporated all of our strange fruit and marry it with varieties that are more common, but nevertheless El Dorado through and through. We wanted to make a wine that, perhaps, cannot be made anywhere else. And so was born our Native red, a tribute to our original brand name, J. Skinner Native Wines dating back to 1861.
Skinner wines are all about tipping a brim to the wines of the Old World while embracing the glorious mountain terroir of El Dorado County. That being said, we maintain a delicate balance of ripeness and structure. Native is made entirely by co-fermentation, meaning all of these varietals were harvested and fermented together, dominated by our Legacy block from our estate (namely, Trousseau, Petite Bouschet, Mission and Carignan). We handle our native fermentations with the remontage technique (versus the more commonly used pigeage, or punch down); gentler on the berries, but aggressively more aerobic for the juice, encouraging high CO2 production which both protects and bolsters our aromatic profile. We aim to produce a wine that sings the praises of the terroir from whence it came. Gently pressed, settled, and sent to barrel for 10 months. Racked and returned in the spring, and bottled just before harvest.

About Skinner Vineyards & Winery

Brand Story

Much like an unearthed vein of gold’s illusive promise once hidden deep within the rock, the contemporary story of Skinner Vineyards and Winery began with a chance encounter that would ultimately reveal six generations of family legacy built on the dreams of a Scottish immigrant and miner during the California Gold Rush with a passion for winemaking in the rich foothills of El Dorado County.
