Tasting Notes The 2019 Loam Cabernet Sauvignon is our proprietary blend of grapes sourced from vineyards planted in Positas, Suther, and Clough soils. It is composed of the best vineyards, grown in the best soil, from the best appellations. Perfectly structured, Loam balances the brightness and focused tannins of hillside fruit with the dense, rich characteristics of fruit grown in the ancient riverbed and valley floor soils. The 2019 growing season was nearly devoid of any extreme weather events. Vines awoke to full soil profiles after the record rainfall preceding March 1st. Cooler spring weather resulted in slow vegetative growth followed by warm summer months. After the onset of veraison, the growing weather was flawless—allowing for extended ripening on the vine with lower sugars and the retention of great freshness upon harvesting. Our 2019 Loam is an exceptional example of an intricately detailed wine. No single note outshines the other, but rather a harmonious balance of violet petal, candied blue and purple fruits, dustings from star of anise, sweet red cherry skin, cocoa and dried underbrush coalesce perfectly. Great freshness with silky tannins make this energetic Cabernet Sauvignon quite approachable for such a young wine, but it still carries the hallmark length and finesse one would expect from our single soil series Cabernets. This beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon will age gracefully for 10+ years.

The Story

Loam embodies our pursuit of the perfect expression of a wine. Great wine originates in the vineyard, and great vineyards originate in the soil. Most world-renown viticultural regions consist of loam soils and Sonoma County is no exception. Within the loam family of soils is an array of classifications, or “series,” identified and cataloged by four distinctive features: composition, depth, slope, and geographic location. Our family grows Cabernet in 23 of the distinct Loam soil types, yet I felt that only three were worthy of the “Grand Cru” distinction.
