Castello Bonomi, the only Château in the Franciacorta area, is located in Coccaglio, at 275 meters above sea level, on Monte Orfano slopes. The estate stretches over 24 hectares on terraced vineyards surrounded by a wood and an old park, in a land characterized by small villages and ancient palaces, rich of charm and history.
Castello Bonomi is the prodigious result of the marriage between man and territory.
The knowledge and passion of Chef de Cave Luigi Bersini, Prof. Leonardo Valenti, university teacher of Viticulture and Enology in Milan, and of Paladin family, is carrying on and renewing the commitment and project of Bonomi family, which began in 1915.

Philosophy

Castello Bonomi, as the other Casa Paladin’s wineries, pursues sustainable cultivation practices, with the belief that “the 90% of a wine is done in the vineyards, through comprehension, respect and enhancement of what nature gives us”.
This philosophy is the basis for the project “reasoned viticulture” that considers the vineyards as an ecosystem to manage in a careful and reasonable way: to protect biodiversity of the territory, to ensure a quality productivity and protect the environment and consumer’s health.
This process is being strengthened with the conversion of Castello Bonomi into an organic winery. This decision comes from the attention to the sustainability, that has always been a feature of the winery and also from the intention to support Franciacorta plan to become the first organic consortium.
The wine quality can’t be separated from the excellence, intended also as respect for the mother earth and responsibility towards the future

Biography

The winemaker team is composed by Luigi Bersini (enologist of Castello Bonomi) Carlo Paladin (founder of Casa Paladin), Paolo Bertuzzo (enologist for Paladin and Bosco del Merlo brands in Annone Veneto), Andrea Sammicheli (enologist of Castelvecchi - Chianti Classico) and Professor Leonardo Valenti (professor of enology at the University of Milan).
The team takes together all the most important decisions on the wine production, these are then follwed by the enologist of Castello Bonomi, Luigi Bersini.

The extent of the estate is 24 hectares. The vineyards are situated in the south of Franciacorta, in Coccaglio, in the beautiful natural amphithetre of Mount Orfano, 275 m. above sea level, exposed south, south-east, south-west to the sunlight.

The vineyards are situated on a hilly ground, they are surrounded by an age-old park. The particular microclimate, the fresh and temperate influences give this area some peculiar and unique characteristics which permit a complete ripening of the grapes. A modern irrigation system is an important support for the plants’ stress.

All the vineyards are planted in “spurred cordon”, with 5/6 thousand plants per hectare. The choice of the cultivation and irrigation system makes the yield quite low and gives a high quality of the grapes, which come from French plants.

The Yield
Each plant produces 1-1,2 kg of red wine, 1-1,5 kg of white wine and 1,5-2 kg of Franciacorta DOCG. The production is deliberately controlled because quality is much more important.

Close to Mount Orfano, in the south of Franciacorta, we have been working for decades the ground and the vineyards which, in these lands, create high quality products. Franciacorta piedhilly climatic variability influences the beginning of the vintage in the different places, where the cycle of ripening of the grapes is considerably different.

The particular microclimate of Mount Orfano makes it one of the most important vintage areas in Franciacorta: the higher maxima and minima, the largest exposure to the sunlight and a different calcareous base.

That’s why Mount Orfano is a very rich ground, where even plants which are typical of very temperate areas, like capers, can grow. Its characteristics give wine a richer structure and a higher alcoholic strength.
