The Character

Tasting Notes In appearance, almost Cate Blanchettish in its pale elegance, a beautiful subtle salmon color (the wine, not Cate). On the nose, subtle suggestions of rose hips, linden flower, black currant as well as a slightly toastiness (methinks perhaps due to the extended bâtonnage and lees contact). On the palate, wonderful bracing natural acidity, good weight and comforting viscosity. Some discreet floral and fruity suggestions, (mostly ribes with background black-cherry notes).

Overall Elegant & subtle

Mouthfeel Bracing acidity with comforting viscosity

Aromas Rose hips, linden flower, black currant

Pairings Scallops, oysters, line caught fish, brunching

Sustainability Vegan t, Biodynamic In Practice t, Minimal Intervention / Augmentation t

The Story

California’s original dry Rosè (produced since 1983)

This Vin Gris is made from bespoke grapes and is not a byproduct of red wine production, per se. We harvested at the appropriate ripeness level for its style. The essential principle here is that less is truly more. The wine does not overwhelm one with fruity-bombasticity; it’s charms are seductively subtle. An extremely elegant and complex Vin Gris de Cigare.

The label - In 1954 the village council of Châteaunef-du-Pape was quite perturbed and apprehensive that flying saucers of “flying cigars” might do damage to their vineyards were they to land therein. So, right-thinking men all, they adopted an ordinance prohibiting the landing of flying saucers or “flying cigars” in their vineyards.

Brand Story

Bonny Doon Vineyard has a not so surprising history of idealism and innovation. Founded in the bucolic hamlet of Bonny Doon in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1983 by Randall Grahm, Bonny Doon Vineyard is known for strikingly original wines made from “lesser” known (though no less “noble”) Rhône grape varieties, and has a long history of experimentation and innovation.
