The Character

Aromas cranberry, raspberry, spiced oolong tea, sweet cream, granite
Tasting Notes The El Dorado Grenache gives us an opportunity to see a different side of our terroir. Grenache is known for being a rather inflexible varietal, so striking a balance between nerve and plush is crucial. This Grenache finds that balance. The nose is explosive with raspberry, citrus pith, and spiced oolong tea. Luxurious on the palate without being overweight, a continuing thread of raspberry, sweet cream, cranberry and granite. The tannins rest centrally on the palate, framed by a satisfying juiciness.

The Story

Grenache has all kinds of iterations. It is one of the most widely planted winegrape varieties in the world. Believed to have originated in Northern Spain (known as Garnacha) and inevitably migrating to France, eventually finding a cozy home in Southern Rhône in the 19th century. Considered a late-ripening varietal, Grenache loves a warm, dry climate and rocky soils… El Dorado County is a perfect fit! At Skinner, Grenache is a big part of our legacy and therefore a major part of our production both on our estate ranches and sourced from our partner vineyards around El Dorado.

Skinner wines are all about tipping a brim to the wines of the Old World while embracing the glorious mountain terroir of El Dorado County. That being said, we maintain a delicate balance of ripeness and structure. Grenache is finicky, much like Pinot noir (although an entirely different beast). Grenache doesn’t like to be overwrought, nor does it like to be under-realized. Picking at absolutely perfect ripeness is key, followed by meticulous hand-sorting, gentle handling and careful tannin management. We employ significant amounts of whole cluster, as the stems bring forth dizzying aromatics, layers of spice and sappy, sweet tannins. We handle our native fermentations with the remontage technique (versus the more commonly used pigeage, or punch down); gentler on the berries, but aggressively more aerobic for the juice, encouraging high CO2 production which both protects and bolsters our aromatic profile. Made up of numerous small lots and varying clonal material, we aim to produce Grenache that is true to varietal, and sings the praises of the terroir from whence it came. Gently pressed, settled, and sent to barrel for 10 months. Racked and returned in the spring, and bottled just before harvest.
