Cepage 84% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc

Winemaking The fruit was picked separately by hand at night, hand-sorted, destemmed and each lot fermented individually utilizing native yeast. The wine was barreled down to 60% new Sylvain, Taransaud, Darnajou, Francois Freres, and Atelier oak barrels. It was bottled unfiltered and unfined after 23 months of aging.

The Story

Phoenix is a barrel selection Bordeaux-style blend sourced from multiple vineyard sites on the Hudson ranch. The wine was named after the 2017 wildfires swept through the estate, miraculously avoiding the original buildings from the 1980s. Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, the Hudson family came out of the ordeal unharmed. This wine showcases a pleasing, harmonious body revealing both red and dark fruits and finishes with great complex structure.

Foresight and extraordinary diligence transformed the land into today’s highly esteemed vineyard. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Lee received his B.S. in Horticulture at the University of Arizona. He then worked with the esteemed Jacques Seysses of Domaine Dujac, in Morey St. Denis, Burgundy; learning that great grapes from hallowed vineyard sites produce truly world class, fine wines. Lee returned to the States to continue his graduate studies in viticulture and enology at University of California at Davis, where many of his classmates are now his clients. Lee searched for property from Santa Barbara to Mendocino, before deciding on the Carneros property in Napa Valley, founding Hudson Vineyards in 1981.
